$9.99/kg EYE FILLET – what a rort!

I recently saw an ad on TV for $9.99/kg Eye Fillet on special at one of the 3 supermarket giants and was disgusted.

My immediate thought was: “Wow, who knows where that came from?” then “They probably source it from some geriatric cow who has run feral in the territory!”

My more cynical mind, however, set to thinking about the business tactics behind this price tag.

Why price THE MOST PREMIUM cut of beef available at a price cheaper than most mince and sausages? Even cheaper than the cost of production? Cheaper than that supermarket can buy it for?

Only to get you in the door.

This ad lures people in to the store with the promise of cheap meat, all the while knowing that most customers will purchase something to go with it. Maybe some salad, a bottle of dressing, a jar of pickles, whatever.

Don’t be deceived that while they may make a loss on the eye fillet, they won’t lose out on the rest of your groceries!

To me, eye fillet steak is an absolute luxury, to be highly valued for the time and effort that went in to producing it. There are only a few kilos of eye fillet from an entire beef animal, and standard pricing for grass fed, ethically raised eye fillet is around $60/kg at the moment.

The effect of such low pricing on farmers and small butchers is devastating. These people cannot afford to lose money on their premium products, “just to get you in the door”. The farmer grows a beef animal for up to 2 years, holding all the risk of drought, fire and flood. The butcher must buy the animal from the farmer at a reasonable price.

It is up to you the consumer to realise the underhand tactics of supermarkets and PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE buy direct where you can!

Those of you buying our beef or buying from a butcher or other farmer, your dollars have power! And not just with meat, but fruit and veggies too! Know that by your conscious choice you are supporting better food produced in a better environment.
